Hi i have just commenced Roberts course and i am finding the course very interesting. I have already gained a certificate in hypnosis and i am due to attend a hypnosis and nlp weekend in a months time. My question is " has anyone used hypnosis to cure things like smoking before completing the course and if so did you charge a fee ? "

Hi Garry, If you've only just started the course, I'd say just practice on friends and family with using hypnosis rather than for anything therapeutic. From your question, I would guess that you perhaps still don't feel confident enough just yet, despite already having another qualification? If you are going to charge people, do you have insurance? Once you go down that road, you should have to cover yourself and the client in case something does go awry. I think, like most things, once you've practiced the basics enough and know the theory intimately, then you will know without prompting whether you are ready to begin using hypnotherapy for business or actual therapeutic reasons. Just my 2p worth. Hope that helps a bit.Regards,LH

Sorry, meant to add...I've only recently passed Roberts course after taking over 18mths to complete it. During that time, I practiced a great deal on any willing friends and family (victims!) until I had the confidence I needed. I am just beginning to set up a business, but will still spend the next few months working for free in order to gain more "real world" experience in a therapeutic setting. My charge to clients? A testimonial and free word of mouth advertising from the people I help. It's more important to know that I can provide a successful and 100% professional service when I do begin to earn money than to make a hash of it because I rushed.Regards,LH

Thanks LH, I was thinking along the same lines in offering services free to commence with and i already have 3 or 4 friends and family willing to act as practice material.

Hi Garry and LH,I completed Roberts course last year and have established a now busy practice working with other health professionals and gaining referrals from GP's.I initially started by practicing with family and friends and, even during the course, would work with the public on minor issues such as smoking cessation and stress relief etc.I did some research and found out what other hypnotherapists were charging in my area and halved the rate.I had great success with this and I feel it worked for two reasons. They gained a cheaper service, however, by actually paying for the service their expectation for success was greater than if it was free. Whenever we part with our hard earned money, we tend to expect something of value. And the number one mental law that makes hypnosis successful is that what the mind expects to happen tends to be realised. Hope I was able to offer something of value and I wish you both the very best in establishing your practices. You certainly will not regret it. Kind Regards.

Thanks for that David and what you said has set the thought processes running.

Robert states in one of his lessons that making a modest charge makes the therapy more meaningful and effective. Personally I have asked clients to make a contibution to our local Hospice, so that there is a monetary value attached to the therapy but the money goes to a well respected good cause. So the client feels I am not making a charge whilst developing my skills with them but the therapy does have a price and thereby value.
