I was wondering . . . how much will outside noise affect a hypnotherapy session? We have particularly noisy children next door; we call one of them "The Shrieker"! To date, every session I've done has been somewhere else, but I was hoping to use my home office for sessions. Anyone have any input or experience with this? Thanks, Melanie

I recall a day I had to see a number of clients with a pneumatic drill being used directly outside my office window. Although I was aware of it, the clients, after receiving suitable suggestions, were not affected by it. In fact, at the end of the day, I felt quite proud of myself as I felt that after that, I could use hypnosis in any situation. However, having said that, repetitive noise is not the same as noise from children. Personally, I would not commit myself to using the home office until I felt comfortable with the situation. Try a couple of clients under the conditions and if you do not feel happy with your sessions, offer them an apology and their money back (or free sessions). After all, you will be using them as guinea pigs. Hope the above helps.

Hi Melanie,Outside noise can be a problem if you do not address it with your clients. My office is situated on a busy highway with alot of distracting sounds, although it is never a problem with my sessions if I do one thing. Usually during the induction I will put in a suggestion "that any external sound will not bother or disturb you in any way. In fact any external sound will help and guide you much deeper relaxed". If I am doing a rapid induction I will use this just before I deepen my clients. As long as I use that suggestion I have never had a problem with external noise. If for instance a particularly loud noise happens to begin during a session, just let them know that the particular noise will not bother or disturb them and the only sound they need to concentrate on is the sound of your voice. Kind Regards.

Thanks to both of you for the input. A pneumatic drill? Wow, that's pretty noisy! I did notice in one of the scripts in the course (I think it was past life regression) it mentioned telling the client that the environmental conditions would help them go deeper in their relaxation, but I wondered if that would work - I guess it can! I think I'll try the home office but continue to look for a small office space just in case I can't make it work. Thanks again.

Hi guys, just to add my bit. As mentioned before, use the noises to your advantage. "...now as you breathe deeper...and deeper... you may notice some outside noises...children playing happy and content...the enviroment in which they play, the gentle breeze... the soothing sounds of trees swaying in the breeze...as you...'Concentrate now'...on the swaying motion of the trees in your mind...the other sounds become muffled...falling away...genlty...as you 'Go Deeper Now'. Swaying...back and forth...deeper and deeper..." I would just get creative with the envirvoment as it changes. The other point to mention, is distraction. "perhaps as those sounds quieten... 'down'...you may notice a diference in feeling in one of your hands...perhaps one is warmer than the other...or even a sleight tingling sensation...this is normal as you...relax...going deeper and deeper".

I use the same sort of suggestions, and if there is noise ( i call it sounds) then i like many of you, use it to my advantage I had a similar though probably nbot as noisy experience when i'd booked in a client and they started building new houses next to me and I said something like, and as you are aware of the new foundations goin gin around you, you're reminded that we are building new foundations in your behaviour etc... also had the damn post man knock during a session to which I quickly said and listen to that knock, it's the knock of opportunity, the opportunity for you to go even deeper, i think it just takes practice and for it not to bother you, if it bothers you, it will come through in your voice.
